Foul play ruled out in death of cyclist found unresponsive in Co Kerry

While a Garda investigation was launched in the death of cyclist in Co Kerry, foul play has now been ruled out and it has been established the man had a pre-existing medical condition

A cyclist who died after being found in an unresponsive state last week in Co Kerry had a pre-existing medical condition and any form of foul play or third party involvement has been ruled out in the case.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses after the man, who was in his 50s, died where he was found last Tuesday morning on the roadside at Ardywanig, Milltown, near Castlemaine, shortly after 10.30am.

The appeal for information was directed at any road users who may have been in the area at the time. However, the man's family was traced and an examination of his remains also established he had poor health, though remained active. His death was linked to his medical condition.

The man has been named as Stephen Justie who lived close to Milltown. He was originally from Northern Ireland but was well known around Castlemaine and Milltown, where he regularly cycled and walked for exercise.

As Mr Justice died of natural causes the matter of any criminal investigation into his death does not arise. Instead, medical evidence and witness statements from those who found him, and the gardaí and paramedics who attended the scene, will be taken for an inquest into his death to be held at a later date.
