
The former sponsor of Rás Tailteann, FBD Insurance, has ended its backing of the greyhound sector after allegations made about the sport.
The company says its deal with Kilkenny Greyhound Stadium was a modest one.
However, news that FBD has ended a domestic sports sponsorship deal will interest many cycling fans.
FBD Insurance backed Rás Tailteann for many years. And
the cycling community with look with interest at any replacement sponsorship
deal the insurance giant puts in place of the greyhound deal.
Both FBD Insurance and Barry’s Tea have announced deals they had to support greyhound racing have been ended after revelations about the sport on RTE’s Prime Time programme.
It claimed the industry was breeding 10 times more dogs
than required each year with thousands culled annually because they are not
fast enough.

cycling’s gain remains to be seen. However, the company was clear why it was
ending its greyhound deal.
“FBD Insurance supports over 100 community events and
organisations with very significant annual funding,” it said.
“Our only sponsorship of greyhound racing was a small
sponsorship arrangement with Kilkenny Greyhound Stadium.
“Following the recent RTE Investigates programme, FBD has
decided not to renew this.
“We look forward to the implementation of urgently needed
animal welfare measures by the Government.”
