One of the powerhouse riders of Irish cycling before his retirement four years ago, Ciaran Power is returning to racing again in the season ahead and has entered the Gorey Three Day over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The 180 places in the race have already been snapped up and while the official start list is not yet available, stickybottle is told Power has entered.

The return of the very popular 35-year-old Waterford man will be warmly welcomed by the cycling community, though those riding the Gorey will be hoping he takes a good few months to get into his stride.

After a very good amateur career from the time he was a schoolboy, Power turned pro with the Linda McCartney team. He rode the Giro in 2000 as a first year pro and managed two top ten stage placings; 5th and 6th.

But then on the eve of the following season the team unexpectedly folded leaving Power and Ireland’s former world junior champion Mark Scanlon high and dry.

As well as winning the FBD Ras twice – 1998 and 2002 – Power won seven stages in the race. He scored pro victories in the UK, US, Canada and Egypt. A double Olympian, he finished 13th in the road race in Athens in 2004. He retired in 2008 but having established his own sports therapy business - http://www.ciaranpower.com - he’s on the comeback trail.
