Former Aqua Blue Sport directeur Nicki Sørensen, who is now working in a management role at Israel Start-Up Nation, has spoken of doping during his career, saying he was now “embarrassed” by it.

The 45-year-old Dane was a pro for 16 seasons, retiring
in 2014 and spending most of his career with Tinkoff-Saxo in its various guises
down the years.

He was Danish road race champion four times and won
stages in the Tour and Vuelta during a long and successful career.

He admitted doping in 2015 and over the weekend spoke about it in an interview with TV2 in Denmark, saying he took performance enhancers from the start of his pro career to about 2004.

"I'm embarrassed about what happened. I felt a bit like a victim at the time, but it was still my choice to do it," he said.

"When I entered professional cycling, it was clear
to me that there was a general culture for cyclists to dope. I was told by
professional cyclists that this is how it worked. That was the only
way.

“Then I made the difficult choice to jump on that
wagon," said Sørensen, who added having been through doping he felt
it was his job now educate young riders to stay away from doping.

Sørensen was as a directeur with Irish ProContinental team Aqua Blue Sport during its near two-years in the pro peloton and within months of that team collapsing in August, 2018, he joined the performance team at Israel Cycling Academy.

Sørensen had worked for the Israeli team before departing to joining Aqua Blue Sport and returned again in December, 2018.
