Heavy rain has resulted in mudslides, floods and road collapses. And the problems are so bad in some places that sections of the Tour de France route are now at risk.
Flooding and road collapses hit Tour de France route
The final mountain showdown at next month’s Tour de France is at risk after flash floods caused roads to collapse.
In the western Pyrénées the rainfall has been so heavy it has swept some of the mountain roads away.
And one of the areas impacted by a significant road collapse is the Col d’Aubisque.
It is set to feature on stage 19 of the Tour de France; over 200.5km from Lourdes to Laruns.
Under current plans, the climb is the last one of the Tour. It is crested some 180.5km into the stage. And the riders then descend all the way to the finish.
Routes off the mountain and into the intended stage end location are limited. As a result, it is unclear if the road collapse will force the stage to be rerouted.
If that were the case, the changes may be quite significant. Local officials have been quoted in the French media saying the race is on to fix the road.
Furthermore, they have also said the Tour’s owners ASO have not yet requested a route change.
Instead, they are willing to allow some time to assess if the repairs can be carried out.
