Remco Evenepoel was recently forced to stop training on his bike and the start of his season is unclear due to the lingering impact of the broken pelvis he suffered at the Tour of Lombardy five months ago.
While that pause in his cycling training is a worry for
the young Belgian rider and his Deceuninck-QuickStep team, he says he is still
preparing to make his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia in May.
The 20-year-old, one of the sensations of the sport over
the past two seasons, says he is suffering from pain around the area where his
pelvis broke.
Speaking to the media online from his team camp in Spain,
Evenepoel said he had continued to do other forms of cardio training but the
pain needed to be resolved before he could resume cycling.
“I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know the specific words but
it’s just a bit of pain in the area where the fractures were,” he explained.
“So sitting down on a saddle; I mean it’s still quite
hard for a few hours. So this needs to get fixed 100 percent before being able
to perform 100 percent on the bike.
“We stepped off the bike for a few weeks already,” he
said of stopping training on the bike recently. “But I’m still able to do some
cardio training like walking and swimming… it’s all going well.”
Evenepoel won all four stage races he rode last year;
Vuelta a San Juan and Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta before the Covid-19
lock-down and Vuelta a Burgos and Tour de Pologne after racing resumed.
However, after claiming those two wins when racing
re-started, he went into Il Lombardia as a favourite on August 15th
last but crashed over a bridge and broke his pelvis, which ended his season.
He said in November he had shed 5kg and at that time he had gone to Calpe for warm weather training but has now run into some lingering issues relating to breaking his pelvis.
