The first road races held in Northern Ireland have now been opened to riders from the Republic as inter-county travel is now permitted from today due to the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions.

Lakeland Cycling Club has confirmed its Lakeland GP promotion to be held the weekend after next – Sunday, May 23rd, to be precise – is now open for entries and that riders from both sides of the Border are welcome.

The Enniskillen club will be promoting two events in Derrygonnelly, Co Fermanagh, on the day; one race for A4s,
starting at 10am, and an event for A1-A2-A3 riders, starting at 12:15pm.

The club’s confirmation that riders from both the
Republic and North can ride is welcome news and represents the latest step
towards a normalised racing scene on all parts of the island.

In Northern Ireland the start of the Covid-19 vaccine
programme was much faster than in the Republic, meaning measures in place to
combat the spread of the virus were relaxed much sooner in the North.

Sports events were able to take place again in the North
from April 23rd. The first road race in Northern Ireland took place the
following day, when Banbridge CC ran the Annaclone Cup, and other races have
been held since then.

However, because people in the Republic could not travel
outside their home counties due to the Covid-19 restrictions, no riders from
the Republic could ride the races in the North.

But with those travel restrictions now relaxed in the Republic
from today, people can travel to any county and Lakeland CC has said its races
are open to all.

However, while the first races in the North have been
officially opened to riders from the Republic, no racing is expected to be held
in the Republic until early next month.
