The early season fixture list has become a little lighter with news that the John Haldane Memorial due to taken place the weekend after next has been called off.

Newry Wheelers said they had no option but to take the drastic step as road works on the course have made it unsafe for racing.

The club, which organises a number of top races each year including the Newry Three Day, has suggested the event may be run at a later date.

Newry Wheelers made the announcement today because entries were due to open online this evening.

A statement on the club's Facebook page said that "due to circumstances beyond our control Newry Wheelers are suspending the John Haldane Memorial”.

"The race will not take place on March 1st and therefore entries will not open tonight - February 16th.

"The race committee will seek an alternative date later in the season."

The club apologised for any inconvenience caused and has thanked riders for their patience and support.

While the development is a disappointment, there is still plenty of racing on the same day including the Fitscience Grand Prix in Ballina, Cycleways Cup in Navan and Darach McCarthy & Co Solicitors Road Race in Limerick.

Last year Gary Cranston opened his account for 2014 by taking a wet John Haldane Memorial combined A1 and A2 event.

The East Antrim Audi rider went clear in a breakaway on the Newry to Warrenpoint dual carriageway course.

He then pulled clear from the breakaway with Des Woods (Newry Wheelers) and Johnny Taylor (Carn Wheelers), beating both at the finish.

Karlo Taylor (Ballymena CRC) won the A3 race and David Donaghy of Caldwell Cycles took the A4 event.
