The next two rounds of the Mondello Series at Mondello Park, Co Kildare, have been cancelled due to the new lock-down being introduced in counties Kildare, Loais and Offaly.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed on Friday evening the localised lock-down was being introduced after a two-week period in which Covid19 cases have begun to increase again, though the national figures are somewhat skewed by large clusters in a small number of factories.

Around half of the new cases in Ireland in recent weeks were recorded in the three counties, necessitating the new localised lock-down from midnight tonight.

People who live in the counties can only travel in their own county, unless they need to travel for work. People are being asked to work from home, pubs must close and visits to prisons, hospitals and care homes are cancelled.

However, retail premises can remain open as can playgrounds
and other outdoor amenities.

Outdoor gatherings are limited to 15 people and contact sports will cease for the next two weeks, apart from professional or elite athletes training.

People who don’t live in the three counties are being asked to only travel there for work or essential care for a relative, but for no other reason. However, people can pass through the counties on their way to other locations.

Usher Irish Road Club has moved immediately to make it clear the next two rounds of the Mondello Series – August 11th and 18th – cannot go ahead and are cancelled.

The news is a real disappointment as racing had resumed in Mondello last month and had been organised very professionally and attracted large fields.

Usher Irish Road Club said it regretted the cancellations but they were required because of the new localised lock-down.

"This coincides with the closures of sporting venues in a bid to address the recent spike in positive cases of Covid19 and reduce the potential spread,” the club said of the race cancellations.

“The restrictions
announced are for an initial two week period. This decision has no reflection
on anybody who has participated in or attended Mondello at previous editions.

“And we are grateful for the cooperation and diligence shown by all in attendance to ensure that our events took place in as safe an environment as possible while also delivering some great racing.

“Unfortunately
this action is taken out of our hands by the state authorities. Currently there
will still be one more round left, round seven, which is scheduled for August 25th.”

All those who have currently entered round 5, August 11th, will have their entry carried over to round seven. Those on the reserve list will also have their registration carried over to round seven.

If round seven does not go ahead because of any extension of the lock-down, refunds will be granted. And for those who do not wish to wait and see if round seven occurs, they can complete the form through this link and the promoting club will contact you.
