The COVID-19 coronavirus has forced the cancellation of Rás Naomh Finian in Leinster this weekend.
The event is the first Irish road race to be called off due to the spread of the virus and its cancellation comes on just the second weekend of the new season.
There were 10 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Republic yesterday, bringing the total to 34, while in the North the number of cases increased by four to 16.
Rás Naomh Finian had been due to get underway from the Moyvalley Hotel on Old N4 between Enfield & Kinnegad.
The promoting club, Clonard Road Club, usually runs four races on the day but unfortunately the events due to take place this Saturday are off.
Clonard CC said it was working to organise a new date for the races later in the season.
“The 2020 Rás Naomh Finian race has unfortunately been
postponed in light of recent developments and concerns over the coronavirus,”
Clonard Road Club said in a statement.
“The decision has been taken in the interest of the
health and wellbeing of riders, marshals, club members, supporters and
volunteers.”
Club chairperson Clodagh Allen said the club felt
compelled to act and make an announcement today, well ahead of the race that
had been planned for the weekend.
“We are very disappointed to have to postpone the 2020
Rás Naomh Finian race. This year would have been our 10th anniversary,” she
said.
“We understand people have been training very hard over
the winter months and (were) looking forward to joining us on Saturday, March
14th.
“Please bear with us, a new date will be rescheduled as
soon as possible, and we look to see all the riders and supporters back in
Clonard.”
The club said for those who registered in advance online,
a refund was being organised in association with Cycling Ireland. However,
