Plummeting temperatures are set hit cyclists' plans just as serious winter training is getting underway.
Those road riders just getting their winter training campaigns underway look set to have their dedication tested this weekend as temperatures are set to plummet.
And it will feel even colder because of the wind chill, ensuring the kind of conditions that will test chain-gangs all over the country.
Met Eireann has conditions for the remainder of Saturday will feel cold; with mostly moderate west to northwest winds and highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees Celsius. It would feel coldest in the Midlands, North and East.
However, it will feel a lot colder across the Republic as temperatures plummet below zero and widespread frost is forecast.
Overnight, there will be heavy rain, mostly in those parts of the country closest to the Atlantic and temperatures will drop to between 0 and 5 Celsius.
It will be coldest into the early hours of tomorrow across the eastern part of the country, where frost will greet many cyclists out training early on Sunday morning though northerly winds will be light to be moderate.
Sunday morning will also be hit with what Met Eireann is describing as “wintery storms” across the north and east.
Once those showers and the frost clears, temperatures will be in the 6 to 9 degrees road, with the Atlantic coast on the upper end of that scale.
However, from Sunday evening as it gets dark temperatures will plummet, with frost expected soon after dark.
It is anticipated temperatures will plummet as low as -3 early on Monday, as clear skies add to the chill effect.
Next week is expected to be wet and windy but the polar air mass of this weekend will be displaced by milder conditions, with temperatures as high as 13 degrees next week.
According to the forecast for Northern Ireland, it looks set to escape the colder conditions of the Republic in the next few days.
Wintry showers are forecast across the North, but it will be an otherwise dry and bright few days with some sunny intervals.
Strong northerly winds at first on Saturday were expected to ease and turn westerly and remain calmer in coming days.
Temperatures are expected to drop now lower than 2 and 3 degrees even overnight, with day time temperatures of up to 8 degrees through Sunday and Monday.
