The first action is to take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at the site of the new National Velodrome and Badminton Centre in Dublin when the sod will be turned on the site in advance of construction starting.

The event, which will be attended by Minister for Sport Patrick O'Donovan and the chief executive of Sport Ireland Úna May, is the first activity at the site. And though it is ceremonial, it makes the official start of the long-awaited velodrome, which is a Sport Ireland project.

Cycling Ireland chief executive, James Quilligan, and Badminton Ireland chair, Vincent Keenan, will also be on hand to mark the historic occasion and speak to the media.

Just last week the Government confirmed construction of the new velodrome on the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, west Dublin, was set to commence. It also confirmed the contract to build the state-of-the-art facility had been awarded, saying it will cost up to €100 million.

While the sod turning takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, construction proper will start early next year, as set out last week in the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport’s sectoral investment plan.

It has been published to flesh out the pledges related to that Department in the National Development Plan Review 2025 published by Government earlier this year.

Construction of the cycling-badminton facility will begin in the first quarter of next year and it is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2027. The Government has estimated the new National Velodrome and Badminton Centre will cost between €50-€100 million.

The centre is the only planned National Sport Campus project listed in the sectoral investment plan that a contract has been awarded for at this point. It is understood Walls Construction will be the main contractor of the velodrome and badminton centre.
