Fintan Ryan, the Irish track international who has signed
for EvoPro Racing, was due to undergo surgery in Belgium today after a crash
out training involving a driver in a van.

Wicklow rider Ryan was out training on Monday in the Gent area when he was hit by the van and suffered a broken collarbone.

However, he told stickybottle he was hopeful he would not be out of action for too long as a decision had been made quickly to operate on his broke bone after a request by the team.

Ryan (24) suffered a 2cm overlap clean fracture of the clavicle but both the rider and his directeur, Morgan Fox, are very hopeful he can come back quickly.

And with the season having only just started, he very much has time on his side to recover and keep himself ticking over with training before returning to action.

The crash came in an eventful 48 hours for Ryan, who is one of two new Irish riders at Irish Continental team EvoPro Racing this year, alongside Michael O’Loughlin.

Ryan made his debut for the team at Grote
prijs Jean-Pierre Monseré (1.1) in Belgium on Sunday, which should have been a
really positive day in his career.

However, while he coped very well with the higher intensity and distance in the 200km race against WorldTour teams, he came down in a group crash in the bunch with just over 20km to go.

He took a significant impact in that fall but while it ended his race he suffered no serious injury. Ryan was out on his bike training the following day, Monday, when he was hit by the driver in the van.
