A cyclist who was struck by a truck in rush hour traffic in Dublin this morning, Thursday, has lost her fight for life.
The woman, who is believed to have been in her 20s, was struck by the truck at 8.45am in Blackrock, south Dublin. The incident occurred on the busy Frascati Road just outside Blackrock village.
The victim was alive immediately after the collision. She was rushed to hospital by ambulance and was treated at nearby St Vincent’s Hospital.
However, despite arriving at the hospital not long after she was knocked from her bike by the truck, news has emerged this afternoon that the woman has died from her injuries.
Her death is the fifth fatality involving a cyclist on the roads of the Republic of Ireland this year and comes as gardai have expressed concern that fatalities generally are starting to rise again after years of a sustained road safety campaign saw deaths plummet.
Gardai investigating the female cyclist’s death in Dublin this morning have begun a full scale inquiry and have asked for any witnesses who may have been in the area at the time to come forward and help gardai.
The road where the woman sustained her fatal injuries had been sealed off and was undergoing an examination by Garda crash investigation experts, though it has since reopened.
Anybody with any information is asked to contact Blackrock gardai at (01) 6665200 or the Garda’s confidential service at 1800 666 111.
