Daire Feeley has pulled out of the Irish national team for the upcoming UCI-ranked Beaumont Trophy (1.2) in the UK, with Mark Dowling (ASEA-Wheelworx) taking his place.
Feeley said a combination of factors led to the decision but he feels it’s the right one, with the National Road Championships just a week after the scheduled event on June 19th.
“I got the offer to go to the race but I only rang them yesterday to say I wasn’t going,” the Team iTap man said about his decision.
It’s been a hectic season for him so far as he’s raced in Ireland, the UK's Lincoln GP and Tour of the Reservoir as well as the Philadelphia International Bike Race last weekend, the latter with the national team in what was his elite debut.
There, he was unlucky to crash on the opening lap and would never regain contact with the main field again.
“I have a very heavy schedule after the national championships with a criterium series race, a British national road race series race as well as the Suir Valley and the five-day Ronde van Oost Vlaanderen.
“I’ll also be spending six weeks in Belgium to finish off the season (with Team iTap). I need a rest after the Rás so I’ll start that now.
“That’s a hard race in the UK (Beaumont Trophy) so I don’t want to empty myself for just that one race,” he added of his rationale for opting out ahead of the nationals.
The team for the race now reads Damien Shaw, Sean McKenna, Conor Hennebry, Ian Richardson, Mark Dowling and Eoin Morton.
The team will be managed by Martin O'Loughlin.
