The video clip below, captured by a cycling fan on the roadside yesterday, captures the sheer speed and power of Mathieu van der Poel's winning attack on the climb in Siena yesterday at Strade Bianche.
The Alpecin Fenix rider waited until the final ramp of the race, Via Santa Caterina, to launch a blistering sprint and immediately distance Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers).
And the clip shot from the roadside on the climb really shows how fast he was going.
The videos - the first below in real time and the second in slow-mo - also show just how much faster and more powerful Van der Poel was on the climb compared with Alaphilippe and Bernal.
The way he tackled the climb with all-out aggression and after such a long a hard race was incredible, especially when you recall what the climb did to Wout Van Aert just three years ago, causing him to cramp so badly he came off his bike, as the video available at this link shows.
