Modelled by Dan Martin, here’s the first look at the Irish cycling team kit for the London Olympics. It was designed to look very similar to the other Irish kit at the Games including the track and field athletes and the rowers.
The new look is very different to the all green we’ve become accustomed to at World Championships and other elite, U23 and junior international races in recent years.
The shorts and some of the jersey looks to be an almost-blue shade of green, with the mainly white jersey emblazed several times with the word ‘Ireland’ and the shoulder tricolour making it difficult to mistake the Irish for another nationality.
This photo of Martin was taken today, Tuesday, in the Olympic Village.
(There’s another photo below of the cycling gear on former international cyclist Tommy Evans, who is at the Games as part of Ireland’s triathlon coaching contingent.)
Martin was the first of the bike riders to arrive in London ahead of Saturday’s road race.
Nicolas Roche and David McCann fly in from France and Belfast respectively tomorrow evening. Ireland’s sole representative on the track, Martyn Irvine is due to fly in from his training camp in Majorca on Thursday evening.
Irvine will have a little bit of time to get used to his surroundings before he swings into action, with his six-event omnium taking place over August 4th and 5th; Saturday week and Sunday week.
Needless to say, we’ll be absolutely banging out the Olympic cycling coverage on stickybottle. With a bit of luck Ireland could have its first medal as a nation this Saturday from one of the road team.
Best of luck to the four lads and their support crew.
