Remco Evenepoel went to Australia hoping to win the TT at the World Championships today and when he heard the title had gone to Tobias Foss, the Vuelta champion looked stunned.

Having come over the line following his bronze medal ride, Evenepoel was filmed while reacting to the news that Norway's Foss - an outsider for gold, to say the least - had won the gold medal. The surprise was written all of his face as he reacted to the words; "Foss, huh?"
Later he was a bit more diplomatic when responding to Foss's victory, saying it was good for cycling if there was a surprise winner at the worlds. He also said he was judging his effort out on the course against the other favourites, namely two-time champion Filippo Ganna (Italy) and Stefan Küng (Switzerland).

"I was a bit surprised crossing line and hearing he won the race because in my radio they were never talking about him. The only name I was hearing was Küng," he said.
“It was constantly about Küng and Ganna. During the time trial I mainly noticed Küng. But having someone else in the world champion jersey is only good for cycling.
"It was a surprise, to be honest, but looking at his final, I think he just rode the best second part of the race. It's a small surprise but if you ride so fast in the second part it means you just have a little more than the others and you were just the strongest in the end."
