Remco Evenepoel (Soudal QuickStep) is well on course to be ready for the Tour de France, despite his serious crash just over one month ago, and should be in peak condition for Critérium du Dauphiné in three weeks, his team boss Patrick Lefevere has said.
Though the Belgian champion crashed at Itzulia Basque Country (2.UWT) on April 4th, breaking his collarbone and shoulder blade, he is back training at altitude for a week and was completing three training sessions per day before leaving for that team camp in Sierra Nevada.
"Not that we ever really doubted it, but Remco Evenepoel will be ready for the Tour," Lefevere, a further predicting an even faster return to top racing condition in a matter of weeks.
"(His shoulder blade) currently causes stiffness in the time trial position, but that is a matter of days. There will be an individual time trial of 33 kilometers in the Dauphiné on June 5th. There is no reason to think that Remco could not reach his best level there," Lefevere said in his column today in Het Nieuwsblad.
“Remco is currently on an altitude training camp in Sierra Nevada. Together with Yves Lampaert, Casper Pedersen, Gianni Moscon, Ilan Van Wilder and Mikel Landa. He is now also more or less injury-free. It is no secret that the riders who are currently with Remco have a good chance of going to the Tour later."
However, Lefevere added that "apart from leader Evenepoel, no one is certain of a selection at the moment" as they all must go on a longlist of potential starters and prove their form for selection.
