Remco Evenepoel was very lucky to escape serious injury after a crash descending at the Giro today when he hit a roadside barrier.
The young Belgian hit the barrier but rather than being thrown over it, he seemed to slide along the top of it somehow.
The Deceuninck-QuickStep rider was in the general classification group, numbering around 40 riders, chasing the breakaway when there was a crash in the favourites' group and Evenepoel was involved.
While several riders were clearly stunned by the crash and took a long time to get back to their feet and then back onto their bikes, Evenepoel stopped for a very long period.
Ambulance crew and team helpers surrounded him and though it looked like he may be about to abandon, he took his time and was treated on the spot and got going again.
