The European Road Championships that had been due to take place in Italy in September have been cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic.
However, it is still hoped the championships can be held
this year at another venue and possibly on another date.
While title races, in road races and TTs, were due to be
decided in Trentino, Italy, from September 9th to 13th, they are now off but
will take place at the same venue next year in the same place.
It has been decided the championships cannot take place there this year as Trentino is in the north of Italy which has proven the epicenter of Covid19.

The Europeans are usually held earlier in the season but
were moved to September this year to avoid a clash with the Olympic Games.
As the Olympics have also been postponed for a year, the
Europeans will again take at a later date in next season’s calendar in Trentino
so they do not clash with the Tokyo Games.
The European Cycling Union has requested one of two dates
for next year’s championships; either September 1st to 5th of September 8th to
12th.
The European federation said the Trentino championships
were being postponed to 2021 because “the uncertainty of the current health
crisis, does not provide the necessary guarantees for organising an event of
such magnitude”.
“The postponement in the international calendar, already
completely overturned this season, would also have jeopardized the technical
level of the championships,” it said.
Had the Europeans gone ahead this year from September 9th
they would have clashed with the new dates for the Tour de France as that race
is set to start on August 29th.
However, while the 2020 championships to be held in Trentino
has been moved to next year, a new venue and new date may still be found to
hold the Europeans this year.
“The Union Européenne de Cyclisme is working very closely with the UCI and National Federations to look at the various alternatives for the 2020 European Road Championships and UEC calendar events this season so that all titles in each category can be awarded in all disciplines,” the European federation said.
