Any hope of retaining his crown in Lombardy next weekend is over for Esteban Chaves due to a broken shoulder blade. He fell hard at the Giro dell’Emilia and his season is now over.
Esteban Chaves breaks shoulder in Giro dell’Emilia
After a heavy fall in Giro dell’Emilia Esteban Chaves has been diagnosed with a broken shoulder and his season is over.
The Colombian crashed on a bend leading the peloton with just over 5km remaining.
He was chasing down lone leader Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) for team mate Jack Haig at the time.
Hospital X-rays after the raced showed a fracture of the shoulder blade. And because he also hit his head hard, he stayed in hospital overnight.
Having won Giro dell’Emilia last year, and then the Tour of Lombardy, his premature end to the season is a big disappointment.
It also means he ends the season without a victory. “This is not how I wanted to finish my 2017 season,” he said.

“Especially without the opportunity to return to Lombardia after such special memories last year.
“But this is the way it is and we now focus on the recovery and next season.
“It’s just a bone and there are much bigger challenges in life, we are lucky.
“We will return from this and I’m looking forward to a new year in 2018.”
Orica-Scott race doctor Matteo Beltemacchi said Chaves would now need to rest for a short period.
“Esteban has a fracture of the right shoulder blade (distal portion),” Dr Beltemacchi said.
“It’s not necessary for an operation on this type of fracture. But he will require approximately 15 days rest.
“(He will have) with his right arm immobilised before some therapy to re-strengthen the region.
“It will finish his 2017 early, but will not have an effect on his 2018 preparations.”
