Errigal Youth Tour set for new hilly, circuit race format; four stages in three days

Errigal CC in Donegal is to host the Errigal International Youth Tour for the second consecutive year, with the race to run over the three days of the August Bank Holiday Weekend; August 3rd – 5th . The race is for boys and girls and is the premier youth event on the Irish cycling calendar.

The three-day is endorsed by both Cycling Ireland and Cycling Ulster and there will be selections from both federations taking part. Traditionally the race has attracted the best youth riders in the country, and with the youth ranks in Ireland growing each year and the standard also very high, it promises to be a great weekend.

As well as national and Ulster selections, the best club teams in Ireland will also be on the start line and the Irish riders will have to contend with teams from Scotland, England and Wales and possibly further afield.

However, judging by the performances of the youths on the FBD Talent Team 2020 and the Neenan Travel Talent Team 2020 at the recent Youth Tour of Scotland – where they won the overall in the boys and girls and took stages and a lot of the classifications – the Irish talent pool will certainly have no cause to be intimidated by the visiting teams.

Indeed, many of the riders who performed well in the race last year have now gone on to the junior ranks and are already winning senior A3 races, some of them in very dominant fashion.

Last year there were teams from as far away as South Africa and the Spanish Basque Country in the youth tour. While the entries are only opening now, meaning the line-up for 2013 will only take shape in the weeks ahead, Errigal CC is expecting another international field this year.

The event will be run on the roads around Churchill in Donegal, where plenty of climbs will split the field and bring the quality to the top. The racing will also be run on circuits to suit spectators more.

Entries for this year's race are now invited from both individuals and teams. For more information you can contact the secretary of Errigal Cycling Club on +353 876771566 or visit www.errigalcyclingclub.com where you can download an entry form and find out more information on the event itself.
