Eoin McCarthy set for pro bunch; signs for An Post-Chainreaction

Still aged just 21 years, Eoin McCarthy is progressing to An Post-Chainreaction at a perfect juncture in his development. Pictured here by Ramsey Cardy of Sportsfile on his way to taking the best county rider prize on Rás stage 4 from Charleville to Roscommon this year.

Having ridden in Belgium for the past couple of seasons, Eoin McCarthy’s dedication to his development has yielded dividends with news emerging this morning that he has signed for An Post-Chainreaction for next year.

The Cork man has become a trusted regular in the U23 international road racing fold, having worked on some of those Irish teams under the management of Kurt Bogaerts who is also the manager of Sean Kelly’s trade team.

McCarthy leaves the Terra Safety Shoes squad in whose colours he has ridden for the past couple of seasons and will grace the professional bunch in 2015 in the colours of the Irish-registered Belgian-based An Post team.

He is a cousin of Robert Jon McCarthy, who was born and raised in Cork before moving with his family to Australia while a teenager and has since become an Australian international.

He rode for An Post-Chainreaction this year, winning a stage and wearing the yellow jersey in the Rás, though he has departed for Dutch development squad, SEG Racing Performance Team under the watchful eye of its new sports director Neil Martin.

Another cousin of Eoin McCarthy, David McCarthy last month signed for the Condor JLT UK-based Continental team meaning the clann hailing from Cork now has three riders in the professional bunch.

Eoin McCarthy has gained a lot of ground in Belgium of late, mixing it in breakaways in some very hard racing there and riding very strongly when selected for the Nations Cup, the international series for U23 riders.

He also took a county rider prize in the Rás last year and gained selection on the Irish team this year for the U23 European Championships in Switzerland in July.

McCarthy raced the last months of the 2012 season with the ASFRA-Flanders Racing Team. He then gained a placed on the Terra Safety Shoes Team for last year and rode for them again this year.

Having only turned 21 years three weeks ago, he still has plenty of time to continue his development and has landed a spot in a great squad from that perspective.
