Entry date extended for National Champs as bigger fields hoped for

The deadline for entering the road races at the national championships on Sunday week has been pushed back to next Monday.

The organisers of this year’s national road and time-trial championships have extended the deadline for entry until midnight, Monday, June 20th.

As it stands 350 have been entered across the three days of racing, which includes Thursday’s TTs as well as Saturday’s and Sunday’s road races.

The quota for the time-trials have all been filled but with 110 riders signed on for the elite and U23 men’s road races it’s hoped more riders will support the biggest one-day race on the calendar.

Uptake for the women's road race and the Masters 60 is also low.

In terms of the men's road race, the fact three of the country’s biggest names in Dan Martin, Sam Bennett and Philip Deignan have all opted not to race opens the door for an outsider to medal.

Damien Shaw did just that in 2013 while with Aquablue in Carlingford, with bronze and Páidí O’Brien did a year later in Multyfarnham, riding for The Edge Sports-Osbourne Meats.

There’s still a good chunk of quality riders down to do battle but a smaller field will make the day even harder.

Race organiser Stephen O’Shea is happy with the course and is hoping a final push can tempt more riders to come to Kilcullen to take part.

“This is a great chance for someone to medal at the national championships because less pros means more chances for the home-based guys," he said.

“The uptake has been healthy but we’re hoping a few more can register; the race deserves it after the ordeal of just getting to this point.

“It’s a challenging course for sure and racing the likes of Brammeier and Roche might be a once in a lifetime opportunity for guys,” he said.
