The full Jumbo Visma team has withdrawn from the Tour de Suisse after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the camp. While likely Tour de France riders Sepp Kuss and Rohan Dennis are among the riders out of the race, the team says, for now, the outbreak has “no consequences” for its Tour short-list.
However, it added it would “have to wait and see what happens in the next few days” regarding its Tour shortlist riders.
The team has a policy of not revealing specific riders or staff who contract the virus and so it has not identified those who have caught Covid in Switzerland.
"Team Jumbo-Visma will not appear at the start of the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse today," the team confirmed. "The reason is that despite all precautions, corona has crept into the team again.
"In the interest of the health of the riders and staff and to protect the peloton and the race, the Dutch formation's medical and sporting management consider withdrawing from the Swiss race the wisest decision. The decision was taken in consultation with the Tour management.
"The adequate action of Team Jumbo-Visma is based on the daily testing of riders and staff so that a possible corona case can be isolated as soon as possible. The use of mouth masks, air purification columns and single rooms is still common practice on the team."
The team's preparations for the Tour de France had been going to plan before now. While Primož Roglič had been suffering from a knee injury he has recovered and won Critérium du Dauphiné at the weekend.
On the final stage of that race, Roglič and the rider he will lead the Tour team with, Jonas Vingegaard, rode away from the rest of the GC men. Vingegaard took the stage victory and 2nd overall.
