Eoin McCarthy will no longer pursue a career as a professional cyclist after deciding to walk away from An Post Chain Reaction. The Corkman said he still wants to race at home and chase results here.
Eoin McCarthy has decided to call time on his professional cycling career and return home to Ireland where he’ll race on the domestic scene.
The former Irish U23 international rider raced this season with An Post-Chainreaction but struggled to get results and found himself increasingly disenchanted from the sport as the season wore on.
He has hardly raced since the national championships in June because of injury and has decided to go the way of fellow Irishman Sean Downey in walking away from the sport’s international peloton.
The pair, alongside Conor Dunne and Ryan Mullen, were among five Irish riders in the team this year.
But their departures leave the team looking very threadbare from an Irish perspective.
Dunne has left for UK-based continental team JLT-Condor Cycles while Mullen has joined WorldTour team Garmin-Cannondale.
As things stand Jack Wilson is the only Irishman in the squad for next year, though it is believed at least one other Irish rider has been in talks with team manager Kurt Bogaerts.
“I still want to race and get results here in Ireland but I’ll be doing it more for fun than anything else,” said McCarthy.
“I’m still motivated and ambitious but I’ve known since August this year I wouldn't go back to An Post. I made up my mind then.”
We’ll have a longer interview with McCarthy later in the week about his plans for the future.

McCarthy on international duty. He will continue to race at home but said it will be for fun from now on.
