One of the best juniors on the domestic front this year, Marc Heaney, will spend next season in Belgium after agreeing to join Asfra Racing Team, a well-known amateur team.

The NRPT-Magnet.ie man raced in Belgium towards the end of this season and will defer his studies for the coming year in order to give racing his maximum attention.

Heaney plans to join his new team at the beginning of February with his opening encounter scheduled for the middle of that month.

“I will spend the whole season there, except for a few races at home such as the Tour of the North,” he said.

He will stay with guest parent Martine Verfaille who he was introduced to by the Belgian Project's founder Dany Blondeel as a first-year junior.

“No one else is going out with me for this stint which will be hard for a while as I settle in," said Heaney.

“But Craig Rea lives 40 minutes away so I always have him to train with.

“It’s going to be a great test and a challenge and I wouldn’t have it but for Dany and the Belgian Project’s continued support.

“It’s opened up a gateway which would have remained locked if it wasn't for his connections and desire in promoting Irish cycling.”

Heaney enjoyed a very good spell in Ireland this year - and Belgium when he went over in August.

And along with Jake Gray they really impressed in some of the junior races, taking an incredible 1-2 in the sport's heartland of Flanders.

Prior to that, both raced on the national team in the Trofeo Karlsberg.
