One of the very best juniors in the country this year, Cameron McIntyre, is to join French amateur squad AC Bisontine for most of next season.

The NRPT-Magnet.ie man had a sterling 2016 that included a win in the Bobby Crilly Classic as well as strong performances in the VisitNenagh.ie Classic and the Gorey Three-Day, among others.

He took almost twenty top-10 finishes and could have won far more races had he not been playing a team role.

He finished the season as the country’s third-highest ranked junior rider behind teammate Jake Gray and Dillon Corkery (Cork Giant Team).

He’s a really strong climber and his victory in the Phoenix CC-promoted Bobby Crilly Classic came atop the summit of Divis Mountain.

Second in the Gorey Three-Day followed, while 8th in the elite National Criterium Championships and 9th in the Junior Tour of Ireland served to underline his credentials as an all-rounder.

In the Junior Tour he was leader on the road for almost 50 kilometres when he took off solo on the Gallows Hill stage, only to be reeled in inside the final 10 kilometres.

Coached by former professional and Irish international David McCann, McIntyre will be joined in France by a number of promising fellow Irish riders, including James Curry and Ryan Reilly.

McIntyre is still only 17-years-old and will turn 18 years on St Stephen’s Day.

That means he is out of the junior ranks for next year and will race as a first-year espoir rider in 2017 by less than a week.

He will join AC Bisontine in April alongside Reilly, while Curry will head to France in February.

McIntyre intends to stay abroad until September to get a full season in France, but will return to Ireland for some key races.
