Having funded its first group of riders through the 2016 season, the Emerald Fund is back again and is offering financial aid to more promising young guns next year.
However, it has changed its criteria and narrowed the group of riders eligible for funding, with the focus firmly on those riders at U23 level and competing on the road next year.
Those who will receive the financial packages must also be based abroad next season and preference will be given to those with teams and accommodation already in place.
The new criteria just published by the Emerald Fund for the 2017 season includes:
- The fund is open to road race riders only for 2017.
- New applicants for funding must be in the U23 category for the 2017 season.
- Existing funded riders can apply for continuing support if older than the U23 category.
- Riders must be based outside of Ireland for the 2017 season.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have already secured team placements and accommodation abroad for the 2017 season.
Among the criteria set out this time last year but no longer applicable included the need for riders to demonstrate the potential to be a European, World or Olympic champion.
Riders and clubs involved in all disciplines in 2016 could apply last time out; including road, track and off road. But for next year that has been restricted to road riders.
The riders funded through 2016 were: James Curry (Banbridge CC), Caimin Muldoon (Aqua Blue), Mark Downey (VC Toucy), David McCarthy (JLT Condor), Simon Tuomey (Cork Giant), Darragh O’Mahony (Kanturk CC), Ciara Doogan (UCD CC) and Stephen Shanahan (Asea Wheelworx).
The application process will open next Monday, November 28th, and the closing date is December 18th.
And the folks from the Emerald Fund tell us application forms will be available for download from 9am next Monday.
With the application process set to close on December 18th, the names of those who have been successful will be made known exactly one month later, on January 18th.
