A group of cyclists out for an early morning ride in Adelaide today suffered a unique mechanical; the modified e-bike one of them was riding caught fire.

Riding in high temperatures in the Adelaide hills, cyclist Gary Ryan was on a Pinarello Dogma F8 that had been modified to make it an e-bike.

Ryan (79) told local reporters the man who had done the job to add a power supply said it must have short circuited.

"Coming up the hill, my electric bike just caught fire so I threw it down," Ryan told reporters at the scene about 20km from Adelaide.

Speaking to Nine News Adelaide, below, the cyclists with were riding with Ryan on Corkscrew Road said when the bike caught fire, the flames were about 10 feet high at one point.

And because Ryan left the bike on the roadside with flames coming from it, the fire spread into the parched undergrowth.

Luckily a fire tender was monitoring a bush fire in the area and quickly arrive to bring the flames under control.
