Disaster for Team INEOS as Egan Bernal out of Giro d'Italia

Egan Bernal was a highly fancied rider for the Giro overall title. But he has been forced out before the race begins after a crash

Team Ineos intended leader at the Giro d'Italia, Egan Bernal, is out of the Italian Grand Tour before it even starts.

His team has confirmed this evening that the Colombian is out of the race having crashed and broken his collarbone.

He crashed out training on Saturday and was expected to undergo surgery on his broken bone tomorrow.

His mishap not only turns the team's Giro overall plans upsidedown but it lines up a formidable Team Ineos selection at the Tour de France.

Reigning champion Geraint Thomas will be back at that race, as will four-time winner Chris Froome; both in Team Ineos colours.

And now with Bernal out of the Giro, he too will almost certainly ride the Tour, bar any complications with his recovery.

His absence from the Giro team also means a berth in the Team Ineos line-up has opened up.

However, it was unclear at the time of writing whether Eddie Dunbar would be in the mix for possible selection.
