There were some nasty challenges for Sam Bennett and his team on the Giro d'Italia rest day.

The Bora-hansgrohe team have had a testing time on the trip from Sardinia to Sicily at the Giro d’Italia, with efforts made to rob the squad.

Writing in his Irish Independent Giro Diary this morning, Bennett said the team vehicles with the bikes were targeted.

A number of efforts were made to open the team vehicles. They were targetted as they were stuck in traffic after disembarking the overnight ferry.

“Despite the mechanics putting the bikes inside the team cars rather than having them on the roof for the journey, they told us they had guys trying to open the boot and car doors to get at them when they were stopped at lights a couple of times near the hotel,” Bennett says in the diary.

“And it didn’t take long to figure out we’re staying in a bit of a dodgy area.”

The team has Bora-hansgrohe hoardings and bollards to block of space in car parks so they can work on the riders’ bikes.

However, they were stolen during the day at the team hotel yesterday.

Update on Sam Bennett's condition

Bennett revealed he has been very ill for the first few days. He said he woke up with a sore throat yesterday but it appeared to go later in the day.

The Carrick-on-Suir man decided to give his body a rest yesterday and just did 40 minutes on the bike.

He also describes a very funny row in the team between the riders. It was over who would get a special edition sticker album released for the 100th edition of the Giro.

Bennett revealed, with palpable relief, that he managed to get his hands on a Sam Bennett sticker.
