Edo Maas is seriously injured in hospital after a motorist drove onto the course in Italy and hit him

A young rider on the Team Sunweb development team has been left seriously injured in hospital after being hit by a motorist who drove onto the course of a race.

Others who were riding have taken to social media to point out the driver of the car involved in the crash was not the only motorists who managed to gain access to the course at Piccolo Lombardia.

Edo Maas (19) has been left sedated in hospital and with multiple fractures to the face and neck.

His team said while he was very badly
injured, his life was not in danger.

“At yesterday’s Piccolo Lombardia, Development Team Sunweb’s Edo Maas
was involved in a crash on the descent of the Madonna del Ghisallo, into a car
that had entered the parcours,” it said.

“Edo was transported to the hospital in
Milano with severe injuries. The following update is given at the request of
Edo’s family.

“Edo is currently sedated, he is stable
and his life is not at threat. He has sustained fractures to his neck, back and
face. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his
injuries.

“Edo’s family and girlfriend are now
with him in Italy, and the team’s doctor will arrive in Milano later today.

“This is all of the information that is
currently available and we kindly ask to respect the family’s privacy through
this difficult time. Another update will be provided when applicable.

“The Team Sunweb family send their
thoughts, prayers and strength to Edo and his loved ones in these incredibly
