Eddy Merckx has suffered a head injury while out cycling with friends in Belgium

Eddy Merckx has been treated in intensive care in hospital in Belgium after crashing while out cycling.

The Belgian legend sustained a head injury and was taken
from the crash location to hospital by ambulance.

Merckx (74) was out riding with friends when the crash
occurred and was taken to hospital in Dendermonde yesterday.

He was admitted to intensive care and further tests were
planned today to assess the extent of his injuries.

Merckx was fitted
with a pacemaker six years ago and the Belgian media is reporting medical staff
took extra caution with him because of that.

The same reports
also suggested he was due to be transferred from intensive care onto a regular
ward today.

"I was in contact with his wife Claudine last night",
Paul Van Himst, a friend of the former pro, told Sporza
in Belgium
.

He added: "According to her, it is, all in all, ok.
Today, new tests are planned."

The Belgian great
won the Tour and Giro five times, taking a combined 60 stages in both races.

He also claimed
all the monuments, winning some of them multiple times and during 19 wins.
