Eddie Dunbar was physically unable to continue on the Giro d'Italia after his stage 2 crash when cuts to his leg exposed the tendon just below his knee.
While the knee was stitched the injury was so severe Dunbar could not bend his knee this morning and continuing in the race was not an option.
However, though Dunbar is yet to comment on his condition, and his future plans for the weeks ahead, Team Jayco AlUla management said he was making the best of it and already considering where and when he would come back to racing.
It was unclear if his withdrawal from the Giro may result in a start at the Tour de France, though it is sufficiently far away to enable him recover in time for what would be a debut ride in the race, assuming the wound and exposed tendon heals well.
“He certainly hasn’t had the luck of the Irish, has he?" Team Jayco AlUla racing director Matt White told GCN. "It’s been two years in a row disrupted.
"Last year he came here on a very limited race programme after two crashes, and same again this year. It’s a shame for him, he’s put a lot of work in to get here and (be) ready."
However, there was also optimism the recovery would not be protracted and that a return to racing action would be swift, confirmed White.
"It should be a pretty fast turn around, but it’s just something that wouldn’t heal while continuing to race," he said.
