Now a top cyclist, riding for Aqua Blue Sport and Ireland, Eddie Dunbar - centre - played rugby for eight years, at scrum-half. He played for Sunday's Well RFC in his native Cork. In a new interview he outlines why he gave it up!
Eddie Dunbar rugby days
Now one of the best emerging young cyclists in the world, it’s a little-known fact Eddie Dunbar once played rugby.
Indeed he spent eight years in the game; at scrum-half for Sunday’s Well in Co Cork.
Having won the U23 Tour of Flanders riding for Ireland last year, Dunbar crashed hard soon after.
His smash on the opening stage of the Baby Giro resulted in concussion that wrote off his season.
But he had signed with Aqua Blue Sport by then. He hasn’t race just yet this year, but he’s settling in well.
In the clip below he’s interviewed along with fellow new boys Casper Pederson and Shane Archbold,
And when asked why he gave up the rugby, he has a very no nonsense response! It’s a nice clip with the three lads; enjoy.
Lara Gillespie showing some grunt
Lara Gillespie, above, put in a great ride for Ireland at the World Cyclocross Championships at the weekend.
Despite being aged just 16 years, the Irish elite champion was 23rd in the U23 race.
And with five more years to come back to these Worlds, the future looks good.
Aside for her performance, the video clip below shows Gillespie is not afraid to get involved physically.
Recorded by Kerry cyclist Donncha Cuttriss, it shows Gillespie running into some traffic on a steep incline.
And she does what any cyclist with a bit of grunt would do; she goes right through them.
The clip also captures just how muddy the course in Valkenburg was; the riders struggling to keep their footing.
