Eddie Dunbar misses out on Vuelta place as Ineos Grenadiers names team

Eddie Dunbar had been expected to ride Vuelta a España this year but the Irish rider has been very unfortunate and missed out

Eddie Dunbar will not make his Vuelta a España debut this year after all as Ineos Grenadiers has named its team for the race today and the Irishman is not on the list.

While the 24-year-old had been expected to ride the Spanish Grand Tour for the first time this year, he tested positive for Covid-19 last week just before he was due to ride Vuelta a Burgos.

That meant he could not ride that race and with just 12 days between news of his positive teats and the start of Vuelta a España, it immediately looked like he would not make the start of the Grand Tour.

Those fears have now been confirmed, with Dunbar definitely not riding, but with Ineos Grenadiers announcing a very strong team in the disappointing absence of its Irish cyclist.

The big news from the team is that new Olympic MTB champion Tom Pidcock is making his Grand Tour debut and that Giro winner Egan Bernal is in the team to face-off against Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

However, cycling fans are being denied the three-rider fight that everyone wants to see as Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Team Emirates) is not riding the race.

As well as Bernal and Pidcock in the Ineos Grenadiers team, the British WorldTour outfit has also selected Olympic road race champion Richard Carapaz for La Vuelta; a race he was 2nd in last year.

That leading trio of riders is joined by Jhonatan Narváez, Salvatore Puccio, Pavel Sivakov, Dylan van Baarle and Adam Yates; the latter also a potential contender for overall victory if he gets a chance to ride for his own result.
