Eddie Dunbar set for big test at Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Having spent the day in the breakaway at Amstel Gold last Sunday Eddie Dunbar is back in classics action tomorrow.

He is part of the Aqua Blue Sport line-up at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The WorldTour monument is a staggering 258km.

However, while the distance will obviously be a key factor for all of the riders, there are also plenty of climbs.

And it is a race that only the very best riders in the world win, or even place highly in.

Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) will also be riding. He won Liège-Bastogne-Liège five years ago and was 2nd last year.

While Martin will be closely watched by Irish fans, many will also be very interested to see how Eddie Dunbar gets on.

Aged just 21 years, he enjoyed a really impressive WorldTour and monument debut last Sunday in Holland.

The Aqua Blue Sport team was first up onto the stage for the team presentation today.

He rode in the breakaway, only being caught by the main group of favourites with 18km remaining. And while he was up the road in the escape he looked like one of the very strongest.

Dunbar and his Aqua Blue Sport team mates will likely try to get up the road again early tomorrow.

Another breakaway ride from the young Irishman would be incredible. But even if he doesn’t make the escape, it will be interesting to see how far he could go from the peloton.

Even to finish races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège, especially given his age, would be a very good ride.

It is a parcours that can suit him; the road littered with climbs. And even the uncategorised inclines, especially close to the finish, often decide this race.

Some of the short sharp ascents awaiting Eddie Dunbar and his teams include deep into the race include the Côte de la Redoute, Côte de Roche aux Faucons, and Côte Saint-Nicolas.
