Eddie Dunbar in the young rider classification leader’s jersey at La Route d’Occitanie in France. The Irish pro cyclist is having a stunning season so far and it looks like there's plenty more to come.
Eddie Dunbar has
taken his first classification jersey in top flight pro racing after his
fantastic performance in France yesterday.
The 22-year-old Irish rider, who is enjoying his first WorldTour season with Team Ineos this year, was 2nd on the opening stage of La Route d’Occitanie.
Only Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) proved stronger than the young Irish rider on the very testing terrain that hosted the finale of the stage.
Dunbar now leads the young rider classification, is 2nd
overall and is 2nd in the points classification as Team Ineos leads the team
standings.
On yesterday’s stage the riders faced two passages of the 4km Cote d’Aubignac in the final 25km, with the stage concluding at the top of the climb second time around.
While Valverde took the opening stage and race lead,
Dunbar was the only rider to finish on the same time as the world champion.
Even the others in the select group lost at least two
seconds and the rest of the field was scattered much further back the road.
The 175km
stage took the riders from Gignac-Vallée de l’Hérault to Saint-Geniez-d’Olt-et-d’Aubrac.
Two seconds after Valverde and Dunbar were 1st and 2nd,
Elie Gesbert (Arkea-Samsic) was 3rd.
Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First) and Ivan Sosa (Team
Ineos) were 4th and 5th, also at the same time.
