Eddie Dunbar is out of Giro d'Italia following his crash on Sunday's stage 2, with his Team Jayco AlUla squad confirming the Irish climber would not take to the start line today.
It is a major blow for Dunbar, who was 7th overall last year and was looking to improve on that result this year. Yesterday's crash, with just over 60km to go on the stage, was the third racing crash for the Irishman this year, though he still arrived at the Giro in good shape, as evidenced by a strong performance on stage 1.
"Unfortunately following a crash on stage two of Giro d'Italia, Eddie Dunbar will not start today's third stage," Team Jayco AlUla said in a statement on Monday morning before the start of stage 3.
"The Irishman was able to finish the stage, but after further examinations by the team doctor, the decision has been made to withdraw the 27-year old from the race due to a sustained injury under his right kneecap and bodily abrasions.”
