Eddie Dunbar has been called up to the Ineos Grenadiers selection for today's Liège-Bastogne-Liège after Tom Pidcock was ruled out of the race.
Pidcock suffered a crash in the late stages of La Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday, but recovered to finish in 6th place. While he was due to pause his road season after Wednesday's race, to start preparing for the MTB event at the Olympics, he decided to extend his spring campaign to take in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
However, Ineos Grenadiers has said he was suffering the lingering effects of his crash on Wednesday and will not start today, with Dunbar drafted in to replace Pidcock.
Dunbar (24), who is now in his third full year at WorldTour level, has already ridden Amstel Gold and La Flèche Wallonne this week; attacking at Amstel Gold and working for the team early in La Flèche Wallonne.
Though Pidcock's absence today is a blow for the team, it still contains a number of potential winners in the shape of Richard Carapaz, Adam Yates and Michał Kwiatkowski.
Tao Geogehgan Hart is also in the team and could be a threat if he can find the legs that won him the Giro last year, though a crash which forced him to abandon Paris-Nice last month has set back his season.
The team is completed by Michał Gołaś and Luke Rowe. It will be Dunbar's third appearance in Liège-Bastogne-Liège as he rode it for the first time with Aqua Blue Sport in 2018 and again in 2019 with Team Sky.
Widely regarded as the hardest one-day race of the year, and where only the biggest riders in the sport can win, Sean Kelly won it twice - 1984 and 1989. Dan Martin took victory in La Doyenne in 2013 and was almost certain to win again the following year but for a crash on the last corner.
