Eddie Dunbar faces a lay-off from racing after he crashed in action today in Italy and suffered a fractured collarbone.

The 24-year-old Irish cyclist was riding stage 3 at Tirreno-Adriatico when he crashed and suffered his injury.

It is something of a nightmare for the Ineos Grenadiers rider as he had been in great form and was also due to ride the Giro d'Italia, which is set to start on October 3rd.

Dunbar managed to get back on his bike today after his crash and he finished the 217km stage from Follonica to Saturnia. He was in 40th place just 1:56 down on stage winner Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling) despite his fracture.

However, checks after the stage revealed the nature of Dunbar's injury and he is now out of Tirreno-Adriatico. It was not immediately clear how long the injury will keep him out of the peloton.

Dr Rafael Santos of Ineos Grenadiers said more checks were required before it would be clear how long Dunbar would be out of action.

"In the crash Eddie landed on his shoulder and he has suffered a fracture to his left collarbone," he said.

"We will now do further investigations, including a CT scan, which will allow us to see the extent of the injury and plan the next steps for treatment."

Dunbar had been going very well of late and took arguably the best result of his career last month when he placed 4th at Giro dell'Emilia.

During today's race he also looked very strong and was in the favourites' select group when he crashed. At the time of his fall that group he was in was less than 20 seconds behind the two leaders; Woods and Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) who went on to take 1st and 2nd on the day.
