Eddie Dunbar’s first appearance at La Fleche Wallonne was
ended today when he crashed with about 35km remaining in the race.
A brief update from Team Sky said that Dunbar had fallen,
among a group, with team mate Michael Golas. But the team said both were back
on their feet.
However, the 22-year-old Irishman was a non finisher, though
hopefully not serious injured.
Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) was dropped on one of the
climbs around the same time Dunbar crashed.
His team said Martin had abandoned the race and had not felt
good all day; a disappointment for him as he was one of podium favourites.
Nicolas Roche of Team Sunweb was the only one of the Irish
trio in the race to finish. He crossed the line in 60th place at 6:27.
The race was won by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep).
The Frenchman and Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) were head and shoulders above
the opposition into the sprint to the line atop the Mur de Huy.
Martin’s team mate Diego Ulissi was 3rd, some six
seconds down on the leading duo.
More to come.
