Having shown signs of strong form in Wednesday’s Trofeo Laigueglia in Italy but also getting caught up in a crash, Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar will hope to continue making advancements in two further Italian races this month.
His Ineos Grenadiers team has told stickybottle that he is next due to compete in the prestigious one day Milano-Torino on March 16th, and will then race the five-day Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali stage race starting March 22nd.
Dunbar was in fine form in the Trofeo Laigueglia, making it into the day’s key selection inside the final hour and a half of racing and then going on the attack alone on the climb of Colla Micheri with 34 kilometres to go.
A thinned-out group from the break managed to bridge across to Dunbar, who remained with the selection and was to the fore as the race headed towards the finish.
However Dunbar was one of several riders who crashed on a fast, tricky descent. He was pictured on television images standing with his bike and ultimately was a non-finisher.
Dunbar’s Ineos Grenadiers team has confirmed that he has no ill effects from the crash, saying that he was caught up in the accident but avoided injury.
Following the retirement of Dan Martin and Nicolas Roche, the Corkman is Ireland’s best prospect of success in stage races and hilly one day events. Still just 25 years of age, he is a talented climber who is hoping to fully deliver on his talent this season. He is in the final year of his contract with Ineos Grenadiers.
