Eddie Dunbar new Amstel aftermath photographs
By Graham Gillespie
The weekend before last Eddie Dunbar made his WorldTour debut at Amstel Gold. He spent the vast majority of the race in the breakaway.
They stretched the gap at one point to 16 minutes. And they were only caught towards the very end of the race.
Dunbar has been speaking about the experience on his team's website. And Aqua Blue Sport has also shared the photographs of him.
And those photographs show just how much of himself he left out on the roads.
Eddie Dunbar has said there was a fight to get away in the breakaway early in the race.
"Once we had a gap it was full gas. We never eased up with each one of us doing turns and just constantly rolling through," he explained.
"I think that showed: we managed to stretch the gap to 16 minutes. And that’s why the break held for so long into the race.
"Nobody every missed a turn unless they were eating and everyone worked well together.
"Coming into the last 50km of Amstel, there obviously were a lot of tired bodies. And that’s when I planned to press on a bit; just to see who was willing to commit.
"On roads like that it’s actually quite easy to hold a gap of a minute or so, if you are fully committed.
"Two or three of the guys were up for it. But the rest of them seemed to be waiting for the bunch to catch up.
"I didn’t want that. And I just thought I’d make it as hard as possible. I drove it on, I did what I could…
"But in hindsight I probably did a bit too much work in that last few kilometres."
In the end Dunbar finished in 81st place, in a large group some 3:26 down.
We'll have more on Eddie Dunbar later.
