Eddie Dunbar all set for major climbs against WorldTour men

Eddie Dunbar gets back to business when he lines up for the Tour of Utah. The young Corkman is part of a strong Axeon Hagens Berman team that includes Tao Geoghegan Hart and Adrien Costa, amongst others.

Eddie Dunbar is back in action tomorrow, Monday, for Axeon Hagens Berman at the week-long Tour of Utah; a 2.HC-ranked event regarded as one of the toughest on the US calendar.

That reputation is owed to the fact it features so much hilly terrain but when altitude is also factored into the equation it makes it even harder.

Among the teams set to ride are Cannondale-Drapac, BMC, IAM Cycling and Trek-Segafredo, to name just a few.

Dunbar and his teammates have been acclimatising over the last week or so and the young Corkman is excited to get racing again after a strong performance in the GP Cerami (1.1) in Belgium recently.

"After the national championships I had an easy week before starting the second half of the season,” he said.

"I spent a week in Girona and then went home for a few days. Then I did the GP Cerami last week and since then I've been in Utah," he added of his recent movements.

He’s part of a very strong team for the next week and though they’ll compete against WorldTour teams Dunbar isn’t fazed by that.

"I'm feeling okay; we have a very strong team in the race and we're all good enough to compete this week.

"The first few days at altitude were not easy but that's normal. The last few days have been a lot better and training has gone well.

"Having said that, it's going to be a tough race, temperatures will be around 35 degrees (C) and we're at 2,000 metres above sea level most of the time.

"There's a lot of climbing; a mix between long, steep climbs and really long, draggy climbs. It should be a good race and I'm looking forward to racing."

The race is the same one Matt Brammeier (Dimension Data) had an horrific high-speed crash in last year when he collided with a car while descending a mountain.
