First truckload of e-bikes arrive for new Dublin bike-share scheme

This is the first glimpse of the new bikes about to hit Dublin's streets in the shape of the Moby Move dockless ebikes

Dublin is about to get its latest bike-share scheme with Moby Move set to roll out its ebikes around the capital.

It's a dockless bike rental scheme that will rival Dublin City Council's own bike share initiative and the Bleeper Bikes project.

The concept behind the using ebikes rather than regular bicycles is to encourage those who are less ambitious cyclists and also commuters who want to travel long distances.

However, because ebikes are being used, the scheme will cost more to run and maintain.

Therefore the charges may be higher, though the pricing structure for users or the exact start date are not yet clear.

What is clear is that the bikes are finally ready to go after the company initially said the first of their bikes would be on the streets last August.

Dublin City Council is for now committed to having two other bike sharing schemes running alongside, but in competition with, its own bikes.

And now with Moby Move about to launch, they join Bleeper Bikes as the second privately run bike-share project in the capital. Bleeper also plans to introduce ebikes.

"Rather than being tied to traditional stations, e-bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any of the designated locations within a larger area," Dublin City Council said of the Moby Move launch.

"Similar to ride services like Uber and Lyft, users simply use an app to first locate than book a bike, and pricing is often contingent on the amount of time spent biking.

"This scheme has revolutionary implications for urban public transport."

Moby is a Dublin tech start-up company which has also devised the Jyroball hoverboard and YX One eboard.

The launch has been delayed as it was planned in August. But now the first truck has rolled into Dublin packed with the Moby Move ebikes
