Early season road races cancelled following safety assessment

Omagh Wheelers has cancelled its McCann Cup races saying it was not safe to run them on a Sunday rather than their usual Saturday date

One of the most active clubs on the domestic road racing
scene when it comes to organising races, Omagh Wheelers has announced the
cancellation of its McCann Cup races.

The club said that both senior and youth races due to be held as part of its usual early season fixture in March had been cancelled.

In a brief statement the club added it was allocated a
Saturday date, rather than its preferred Sunday slot.

And when a safety assessment was conducting to check the
viability of switching the race to a Saturday, it concluded the events should
be cancelled.

It has indicated the events are not being rescheduled to
a later date in the season. However, Omagh Wheelers added the races would be
held again next year.

“Sadly we did not secure a Sunday date, and following a
risk assessment of traffic on Saturdays, we have made the decision to cancel
the event.”

It was doing this “for the safety of both competitors and other road users” but added it would “aim to be back as usual in 2021 with a Sunday date”.

The race was run
last year on Sunday, March 24th,
when the men’s race was won by Conor McCann from Lindsay Watson and
Angus Fyffe.

The elite women’s
event was taken by Clodagh Gallagher from Elia Tutty and Ciara Kelly.
