Eamon Lucas we salute you: He was trying to hold off Irish cyclist Conor Hennebry for a place in the top 10 and so ran all the way to the finish when he crashed on the final lap (All photos with thanks to Martine Verfaillie)
Eamon Lucas took a leaf out of Chris Froome's book on Friday when racing in Belgium; deciding to run part of the course when he crashed.
The US rider was in a 10-man breakaway when he crashed in the final kilometre.
His bike wasn't rideable and he had no chance of getting a quick replacement. So rather than see a top 10 slip by after a hard race, he ran to the finish line.
Just behind him, chasing down the breakway on his own, was Ireland's Conor Hennebry.
As this video (just below) and photo sequence by Martine Verfaillie (bottom of page) reveal, Lucas ran hard to the finish to ensure he’d hang on to his top 10 placing.
The Shifting Gears-Geldhof Jielker rider stayed ahead of Hennebry, who claimed 11th, and was then 2nd in another race today.
Because the same rules don’t apply in Belgian kermesse
racing as in top flight pro racing, Lucas was not required to finish with his
bike.
It meant simply running over the line was enough to keep him in the race and in the top 10.
His running was reminiscent of Chris Froome running up a section of Mont Ventoux in the Tour in 2016 when his bike broke due to a crash.
However, Froome eventually got a replacement bike and finished on it, as per the rules for top flight racing.
